I follow a couple of the eagle cams. Jackie was attacked recently by a couple of sub-adults, and is in re-hab/recovery atm.

I scared up an eagle this morning on my way to work. It was in the middle of the road in a swamp eating some roadkill. It took off in the same direction I was going, and it's an enclosed area (treed) so it was just flying along just ahead of me just above the car. I started to feel like I was chasing it but we just happened to be going the same way.

Eagles are something we never saw in this area in my youth. They have made a remarkable comeback in my area, and I'm lucky enough to see them fairly frequently now. I know where there are 2 nests.

I've seen some speculate that Jackie was anemic because she had two clutches so close together this winter, and was just sort of worn out from that; so she was ripe for other sub-adults to take advantage of her weakness by attacking her. I'm relieved that they've found no indication of lead poisoning, or swallowed objects. It's also so bittersweet that a generous donor came forward to save the conservancy that the eagles call home territory. As the campaign to raise money evolved and only half of the $10M had been raised, I was hoping that a philanthroper would step forward to send it over the edge, and it happened!!

I really, really hope the treatment she's getting will be enough to save her. How lucky she's been to be able to get the blood transfusions from another eagle in CA! I've been watching them for about five years now. I love how people online are concerned that if she takes too long to come back, another female eagle will try to take Jackie's place with Shadow. The naturalists have said that Jackie and Shadow have an incredible bond, and don't believe he would look for another mate. His hormones to reproduce won't kick in until December, so as long as she's back by then, they should be OK.

But yes, fingers crossed for Jackie!!

Well, now, thanks to this thread I created, I am following Jackie the bald eagle!!!
On another note, my baby flew away today. Im hoping it comes back and makes a hime now. He was just an egg a few weeks ago. On the bright side, I can come and go as I please without tip toeing for a while. I had to walk on eggshells or the parents would fly away. Thats how the firat hatchings died.

So very sorry to share that Jackie passed away this morning. Her legacy will be all those who continue to learn about raptors and their place on our planet. 🦅❤️🦅

Oh no! I hadn't seen that sad news yet.

So sad. She was a beautiful creature and such a devoted mother. When she sat on her nest for 60 days in the snow, that’was amazing.

But at least we have the little Japanese polar bear, putting a traffic cone on his head to cheer us up

The eagle cam that I follow most is the one in NE Florida. You can google north east Florida eagle cam.

It's also had its up and downs through the years. The pair was Romeo and Juliet for the first years, and then she disappeared after laying her eggs one year. Romeo tried his best. My memory is hazy but I seem to recall that there was an egg that hatched, and a new female had been hanging around a bit. She had tried to incubate the egg(s) at some point and Romeo didn't seem real comfortable with it. And once the egg hatched, she snatched the eaglet and took off. So that was pretty heartbreaking. These are real reality shows!

Then one of Romeo and Juliet's sons returned to the nest. Samson had a slightly deformed talon, which was how they knew it was him. I'm thinking that he eventually formed a bond with Gabrielle? She's the resident eagle female there now, but her mate is a male named Beau now. Last season, they hatched only one egg and were raising Bodie when a juvenile eagle started hanging out. Eventually the family just accepted it, let it hang out, and provided for it along with Bodie so that was pretty amazing!

Beau just returned to the nest within the past few days so we'll be looking for Gabrielle to join in with nest renovations. They usually have eggs hatching around Xmas/Jan time frame.
